SOME FACTS ON CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

Christian Science is a religion based on the words and works of Christ Jesus.  It draws its authority from the Bible and its teachings as set forth in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, was born in Bow, New Hampshire in 1821.  Following the effects of a serious accident in 1866, she was healed instantaneously after reading the story of one of Jesus' healings in the Bible.  She then devoted the rest of her life to discover the divine Science of the Master's healings that contributed to her remarkable recovery.  

In 1875 she first published the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.  Her book is now published in 17 languages and English Braille.  

Science and Health was voted by the National Book Association as "one of 75 books by women whose words have changed the world".  

The Christian Science Monitor is an international daily newspaper, founded in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy.  The mission of the Monitor is "to injure no man, but to bless all mankind".  The winner of multiple awards, including seven Pulitzer Prizes, the Monitor offers dependable journalism and balanced in-depth news coverage.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN NOVA SCOTIA

Christian Science was first introduced in Nova Scotia in 1886 by Julia Bartlett, who became a member of the March Primary Class taught by Mary Baker Eddy in 1889.  She was joined by another of Mrs. Eddy's students, Clara Shannon in 1901.

Services were first held in Halifax in 1892, at 106 Granville Street.  A Christian Science Society was formed in Halifax on April 2, 1901.

On June 23, 1905 the Society reorganized to become First Church of Christ Scientist, Halifax.  Almost immediately after, the property at the corner of South Park and Inglis Streets, formerly a Methodist day school, was purchased for the new church.  The first service was held there in 1905.

In 2019 the property at South Park and Inglis Street was sold and the Church reorganized to become the Christian Science Society, Halifax and in 2020 the Christian Science Informal Group, Bear River was formed.

The Christian Science Society, Halifax currently offers Sunday Church Services and Wednesday evening testimony meetings available by telephone.

The Christian Science Informal Group, Bear River currently hosts DiscoveryBound Outreach activities and maintains a bookstore and Reading Room in Bear River, Nova Scotia.
